ASROCK ION 330 HDMI Sound XBMC

Posted by NewsFeeder on 26th June 2009

I had been stuggling to get the sound working on mine

Sound

The Revo is a quiet box, however on installing Ubuntu it was a bit too quiet, not producing any audio at all! We need to do three things to rectify this: 1) tell Ubuntu what type of sound card is in the machine, 2) Unmute something that should not be muted, 3) make sure all audio is going out through the HDMI socket. I managed to get all of this working, but the headphone socket no longer works so I might look at some point to see if that can be rectified. In the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base add this line:
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-6ch-dig

You may have to reboot here to get Ubuntu to pick up the right sound card. Now go to Sound Preferences (SystemPreferencesSound) and under Devices make sure that “HDA Nvidia NVIDIA HDMI (ALSA)” is selected for all non-capture options and click Close. Open a terminal and enter alsamixer you should find that “Generic 10de NVIDIA MCP7A HDMI” is showing as the chip. Press the right arrow until an entry named “IEC958 1″ is highlighted and make sure it is not muted. If it is press “m” to unmute it. Press Escape to leave alsamixer. If you try the sound tests under SoundPreferencesSound you should find that they now work.

Rapidshare fined €24m for hosting illegal songs

Posted by NewsFeeder on 26th June 2009

File hosting service Rapidshare has been fined €24m by a German court and ordered to filter online content more effectively. German royalties collector GEMA, which brought the case against the company, had called on the Regional Court in Hamburg to order Rapidshare to prohibit around 5,000 music tracks from being made available online.

“The judgment states that the hosting service itself is now responsible for making sure that none of the music tracks concerned are distributed via its platform in the future,” according to a GEMA.

Garmin wrestles with failing satnavs

Posted by NewsFeeder on 26th June 2009

Garmin has landed itself in a sticky situation following a spate of complaints claiming the the firm’s satnavs are faulty.

Over the past few days, rather a lot of Garmin Nüvi 7×5 satnav owners have written in online forums that their devices suddenly started having difficulties finding satellites or updating their firmware. The issue is thought to have been caused by an on-going software glitch.

Garmin this week issued a firmware update it claims will correct all such problems. The patch is available online.

But the update, Garmin admitted, currently only works for its Nüvi 7×5, 800, 8×5, Zumo 660, GPSMAP 620 and GPSMAP 640 models. Firmware updates for other affected devices will be available online “in the near future”, the company pledged.

Some bloggers had also claimed that their Garmin satnavs turned themselves off and, the firm’s admitted, it’s necessary for this group of users to go online to “to request a return authorization so that the device may be repaired under warranty”. ®

knob could ground space shuttle Atlantis

Posted by NewsFeeder on 26th June 2009

NASA is pondering how to remove a rogue knob which has firmly wedged itself between a window and the dashboard of space shuttle Atlantis - an apparently minor affair which could actually result in a six-month delay in the venerable vehicle’s STS-129 mission to the International Space Station, or even see the shuttle grounded for good.

According to NASAspaceflight.com, the offending part is “a quick shoe mount knob from a crew work lamp” which was discovered during maintenance work at the shuttle’s Orbiter Processing Facility.

The knob is resting between the dashboard panel (pics and full details here) and the window’s inner pressure pane and has caused some damage to the glass. Accordingly, it “must be removed to evaluate pane condition before flight”, NASA has concluded.
